An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented Chef to join our growing Academy

Bolingbroke Academy, a secondary school for 11-18 year olds, welcomed its first Year 7 pupils in September 2012, with another 120 pupils joining every year until the school is fully subscribed in 2018.  Bolingbroke Academy provides a first class learning environment based on outstanding teaching, great relationships and excellent facilities. We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented chef to join our growing Academy.  Under the direction of the Academy’s Chef Manager, the postholder will consistently prepare, cook and present food to school standards.  The Chef will ensure that high levels of cleanliness are maintained in the kitchen dining area and that a high standard of catering service is provided at all times.   

The ideal candidate will:

  • have a relevant catering qualification, as well as a Health and Hygiene Certificate;
  • be hardworking, conscientious, detail orientated and highly organised;
  • demonstrate a genuine interest in helping children learn how to eat healthily;

Job Description

  • Reporting to: Chef Manager
  • Start date: September 2018
  • Salary: Ark Support Staff Pay Scale (Inner London), Band 6, point 22.
  • Hours: 36 hours per week, term time only (39 weeks)

The Role

  • Consistently prepare, cook and present food, to school standards, under the direction of the Chef Manager.
  • Supervise catering staff whose kitchen duties are allocated by the Chef Manager.
  • Ensure high levels of cleanliness are maintained in the kitchen dining area, and that a high standard of catering service is always provided.

Key Responsibilities

Food

  • Assist in the planning and preparation of menus.
  • Ensure that food is prepared and stored in accordance with the Academy’s hygiene procedures, including ensuring that temperatures are recorded, samples are taken, foodstuffs are stored safely and hygienically and a food production plan is completed.
  • Assist in the planning, preparation and cooking of food for special functions and events.

Operational

  • Ensure that your work area is maintained in a clean and hygienic state at all times.
  • Adhere to the Academy’s policies and procedures at all times, including the Academy’s Hygiene and Health and Safety policies and procedures.
  • Demonstrate good standards of customer service.
  • Assist with stock control/stock taking.
  • As and when required by the Chef Manager, carry out additional tasks concerned with the operation of the kitchen.
  • Instruct members of the Catering team in food production methods.
  • Receive and check supplies and store away safely.
  • Deputise for the Chef Manager as required.

Other

  • Undertake any other professional duties as reasonably directed by the Chef Manager, Operations Manager and/or Principal.
  • Attend training and meetings relevant to the post.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability to meet the needs of the Academy.
  • Help create a strong Academy community characterised by consistent, orderly behaviour and caring, respectful relationships.
  • Demonstrate discretion and an understanding of confidentially at all times.

Qualification Criteria

  • Right to work in the UK (Essential)
  • Relevant catering qualification (Essential)
  • Health and Hygiene Certificate (Essential)
  • First aid qualification (Desirable)

Experience

  • Experience of catering in large quantities, ideally within a school or education setting (Desirable)
  • Experience of working with children (Desirable)
  • Experience of cultural diversity, with particular reference to food preparation and dietary preferences (Desirable)
  • Knowledge of healthy eating and nutrition and creating healthy menus (Essential)
  • Experience of baking (Desirable)

Personal Characteristics

  • Hard working, conscientious, detail orientated and highly organised.
  • Excellent team player, helpful, friendly and willing to undertake extra tasks as and when necessary.
  • Good role model for pupils and staff, with high expectations of self and others.
